“Transitioning industrial boilers from coal to biomass fuels reduces emissions, boosts efficiency, and supports Vietnam’s Net-Zero production goals effectively.”
TRANSITIONING FUEL IN INDUSTRIAL BOILERS: A PATH TOWARD LOW-EMISSION PRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
In Vietnam, approximately 9,000 industrial boilers are currently operational, with most relying on coal as their primary fuel. Transitioning from coal to cleaner energy sources, such as biomass, can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving production efficiency. This transition aligns with the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to achieving Net-Zero emissions.

According to Mr. Tran Van Luong, Chairman of the Vietnam Heat Engineering Science and Technology Association, businesses have a significant opportunity to adopt cleaner boiler fuels. Biomass pellets, in particular, present a viable alternative to coal. Not only does this shift reduce emissions, but it also enhances the competitiveness of products in the global market.
Current Status of Industrial Boilers in Vietnam
Industrial boilers play a vital role in industries such as textiles, food processing, chemical manufacturing, and agricultural processing. However, the majority of industrial boilers in Vietnam still rely on coal. This reliance results in substantial greenhouse gas emissions, which severely impact the environment.

Despite efforts, most boilers continue to use coal. While some companies have started adopting biomass fuels, the scale remains limited. Mr. Luong noted, “Global supply chain companies, such as Adidas, Nike, and Samsung suppliers, have begun transitioning, but supportive policies are crucial to accelerate this trend.”
Biomass Pellets Market: A Major Domestic Opportunity
Vietnam produces over 5 million tons of biomass pellets annually, with 95% exported to Japan and South Korea. However, the domestic market holds immense potential in light of the Net-Zero commitment. Dr. To Xuan Phuc from Forest Trends emphasized that promoting local biomass pellet use could reduce reliance on exports and foster the development of a domestic carbon market.

Challenges in Fuel Transition
Despite the potential benefits, businesses face several challenges in switching to cleaner fuels. High initial investment costs, a lack of technical standards for biomass-fired boilers, and an underdeveloped domestic carbon market are significant barriers.

Dr. Phuc remarked, “The government should implement specific support policies, such as loan incentives, standardization of biomass boiler technologies, and mechanisms to encourage participation in the carbon market.”
CONCLUSION
The transition to cleaner fuels for industrial boilers is not only a trend but a necessity for achieving low-emission production. With government support and business initiatives, utilizing biomass fuels like pellets can yield significant economic and environmental benefits.
