ASEAN Announces 5 Strategic Activities to Develop Artificial Intelligence

Potential

INTRODUCTION

ASEAN has officially launched five key strategic activities related to artificial intelligence (AI) to promote the development of this technology in the region. These initiatives are coordinated by the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI), with support from dialogue partners. The primary goal is to position ASEAN as a competitive region in the rapidly growing global AI sector.

ASEAN AI Conference and Joint Statement

The 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology, and Innovation (AMMSTI-20) was held on June 7 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, under the theme “Application of Artificial Intelligence: Journey to the Future”. This theme was agreed upon at the 85th COSTI meeting and related meetings. After the conference, ASEAN ministers issued a Joint Statement, emphasizing the crucial role of AI in economic development and technological innovation.

Strategic Activities

Cambodian Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Mr. Hem Vanndy, announced that ASEAN will implement five key activities to promote the sustainable and responsible application of AI.

5 Key ASEAN AI Activities

1. Consultation on Generative AI

This activity focuses on providing guidance and sharing in-depth knowledge about generative AI and how to apply this technology across various sectors. Experts and researchers will discuss the potential risks and practical applications of generative AI within ASEAN.

2. ASEAN Workshop on AI in Carbon Neutrality and Green Economy

AI can play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting the green economy. This workshop will help member countries identify methods to apply AI to optimize resources, improve energy efficiency, and reduce negative environmental impacts.

3. ASEAN-Korea AI Business Model and Development Competition

This competition encourages innovation and cooperation between businesses and researchers from ASEAN and South Korea. Innovative AI-based business models will be introduced, evaluated, and supported for development to enhance AI applications in practice.

4. ASEAN-Korea AI Convergence and Coding

This activity aims to create deeper collaboration between ASEAN and South Korea in standardizing, developing, and applying AI. Joint initiatives will ensure the integration of AI technology into existing systems in the region.

5. AI for Sustainable Development Initiative

ASEAN aims to leverage AI to address challenges in sustainable development, such as resource management, environmental protection, and improving the quality of life. These initiatives will help ASEAN countries utilize AI to promote economic growth while ensuring sustainable development.

Impact of AI on ASEAN’s Economy

According to the Joint Statement, ASEAN countries recognize AI as a driving force for technological innovation and economic growth. AI could contribute between 10% and 18% to the region’s GDP by 2030, equivalent to approximately 1 billion USD. This demonstrates that AI is not just a technological tool but also a vital engine for enhancing ASEAN’s economic position.

Additionally, ASEAN ministers emphasized the importance of investing in AI infrastructure, including data centers, computing resources, and connectivity systems. Developing these infrastructures will facilitate AI research, application deployment, and support for innovative businesses.

ASEAN’s Approach to AI Governance

The conference also highlighted the need for AI governance regulations to ensure the technology is used safely, responsibly, and ethically. A special task force has been established to develop policies for managing generative AI, protecting privacy, and ensuring transparency in AI usage.

Furthermore, ASEAN countries committed to closer cooperation in data sharing, enhancing interoperability between AI systems, and maintaining ethical standards in AI research and applications.

CONCLUSION

The implementation of ASEAN’s five strategic AI activities marks a significant step forward, not only helping the region catch up with global technology trends but also opening up numerous opportunities for sustainable development. With close coordination between member countries and international partners, ASEAN has the potential to become a leading AI technology hub, contributing to the overall development of the region and the world.
