INTRODUCTION
A Crucial Step for ASEAN-Japan Collaboration
On December 20, 2024, the ASEAN – Japan Co-Creation Economic Forum was held in Japan, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between the two regions. The event attracted senior ASEAN officials, Japanese representatives, and international experts. Discussions focused on key areas such as next-generation transportation, digitalization and AI, and green transition, opening new opportunities for sustainable economic cooperation.

High-Level Participation
The forum featured prominent figures, including ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, Thailand’s Minister of Commerce Pichai Naripthaphan, and Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce KOBAYASHI Ken. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry also participated. Leading the Vietnamese delegation, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyễn Hồng Diên reaffirmed Vietnam’s active role in regional cooperation.
In his speech, Minister Nguyễn Hồng Diên emphasized the importance of strengthening ASEAN – Japan cooperation, especially in the context of global economic fluctuations, focusing on three key areas: industry, energy, and transportation.
Advancing Modern Industrial Transformation
In the industrial sector, Minister Nguyễn Hồng Diên urged Japan to support ASEAN in transitioning towards high-tech industries. Cooperation will focus on electronic component manufacturing, automation, and new materials, enhancing production capacity while reducing emissions.
Smart factories utilizing AI, IoT, and Big Data are set to become the future trend. Additionally, Japan is expected to assist in training high-quality human resources, strengthening ASEAN’s competitiveness.
Expanding Clean Energy Cooperation
ASEAN and Japan have significant opportunities to collaborate on renewable energy development, including solar, wind, biomass, and advanced hydrogen technologies. Vietnam, with its abundant resources and offshore wind potential, can play a key role in the region’s green energy supply chain.
Both sides also committed to diversifying energy sources, developing an ASEAN power grid, and ensuring safe nuclear energy cooperation. These initiatives will enhance energy security and accelerate the green transition across the region.
Developing Next-Generation Transportation
Another crucial topic discussed was next-generation transportation. With expertise in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, and hydrogen technology, Japan can support ASEAN in establishing EV manufacturing hubs and a charging and hydrogen station ecosystem.
Japanese companies are expected to invest in EV production in Vietnam while transferring battery technology and smart charging systems. Favorable policies from ASEAN nations will further facilitate urban green mobility, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Driving Sustainable Economic Growth
Minister Nguyễn Hồng Diên affirmed that ASEAN-Japan relations present vast opportunities for sustainable economic growth, improved living standards, and environmental protection. Collaborative initiatives in industry, energy, and transportation will be instrumental in the green transition and regional economic development.
ASEAN and Japan must fully leverage their cooperation potential to create innovative solutions, promote green investments, and build a sustainable economic ecosystem.
