INTRODUCTION TO VUNG ANG 1 THERMAL POWER PLANT

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant, located in Ky Loi Commune, Ky Anh Town, Ha Tinh Province, is one of the most important thermal power plants in Central Vietnam. With a designed capacity of 1,200 MW, consisting of two 600 MW units, the plant plays a crucial role in ensuring a stable electricity supply to the national grid. To meet the target of 6.5 billion kWh in 2025, the plant is expected to consume over 3 million tons of coal, marking an increase compared to 2024.

The large coal consumption poses challenges in supply, transportation, and environmental protection. However, with optimized production technologies and an efficient coal procurement plan, V.Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant is gradually affirming its vital role in ensuring national energy security.

OVERVIEW

Advanced technology and high efficiency

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant is equipped with a direct pulverized coal combustion system, utilizing advanced equipment from G7 countries to optimize power generation efficiency. This technology not only enhances fuel utilization but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the plant’s exhaust gas treatment system includes advanced technologies such as the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system and electrostatic precipitator (ESP). These technologies significantly reduce SO₂ emissions and airborne dust generated during coal combustion. As a result, the plant ensures stable electricity production while complying with strict environmental protection regulations.

Coal consumption plan for 2025

To meet electricity production demands, the V.Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant will consume over 3 million tons of coal in 2025. Of this, approximately 2 million tons will be supplied by Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Group (TKV), while the remaining 1 million tons will be sourced through bidding by PV Power, either domestically or through imports from Laos.

Ensuring a stable coal supply is essential for continuous operation. To achieve this, the plant’s management has negotiated with domestic and international suppliers while strengthening fuel storage strategies to mitigate market fluctuations.

Coal reception and storage system

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant benefits from a dedicated port system for coal reception. This port can accommodate large-capacity vessels, facilitating coal imports from overseas suppliers.

Additionally, the plant has two coal storage facilities, each with a maximum capacity of 200,000 tons, ensuring sufficient fuel reserves for stable production. Furthermore, the use of the Laos-Vietnam international port for transporting imported coal from Laos is a strategic solution to diversify supply sources and optimize transportation costs.

Contribution to national energy security

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant plays a crucial role in ensuring a stable electricity supply for the national grid. With an estimated output of 6.5 billion kWh in 2025, the plant will significantly contribute to meeting the increasing power demand in Central Vietnam and across the country.

Moreover, the plant’s stable operation reduces pressure on other energy sources, particularly as industrial and urbanization demands continue to rise. This ensures a reliable power supply for both industrial production and daily consumption, fostering economic growth.

Challenges and sustainable operation solutions

Despite having a well-defined coal supply plan, the plant faces multiple challenges, including fluctuations in global coal prices. Additionally, increasing environmental protection requirements add pressure on the plant to reduce CO₂ emissions and maintain air quality.

To address these challenges, Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant’s management has implemented several strategic solutions:

  • Diversifying coal sources: Combining domestic coal with imports to ensure a stable fuel supply.
  • Enhancing emission treatment technologies: Upgrading FGD and ESP systems to minimize environmental impact.
  • Improving operational efficiency: Optimizing production processes to increase fuel efficiency and reduce coal consumption.
  • Transitioning to cleaner energy sources: In the long term, the plant may explore co-firing biomass or low-emission fuels to reduce dependence on coal.

CONCLUSION

Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant is making strategic moves to ensure stable operations and meet the country’s growing electricity demand. Consuming over 3 million tons of coal in 2025 is part of an efficient operational plan, reinforcing the plant’s contribution to national energy security.

Although challenges remain, with optimized technologies, a diversified fuel supply, and improved operational management, V.Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant will continue to play a key role in Vietnam’s power system while striving for sustainable development in the future.
