INTRODUCTION

What Are Wood Pellets?

Wood pellets, often called sawdust pellets, are a type of biomass fuel derived entirely from natural wood. The materials include wood chips, tree trunks, and sawdust, compressed without any additives. These raw materials are typically by-products from lumber and agricultural processes.

Since wood pellets utilize wood waste, they are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and efficient. Additionally, wood pellets are replacing traditional fossil fuels such as gas, oil, and coal due to their sustainable and renewable nature.

Composition and Technical Specifications of Wood Pellets

Wood pellets consist entirely of natural wood compressed into a uniform shape. These pellets must meet specific standards, including low moisture content, minimal ash content, and high calorific value. For exported pellets, additional details like sulfur, nitrogen, and chlorine levels are often required. These specifications may vary depending on the destination market.

Applications of Wood Pellets

Wood pellets are versatile and find use in various industries and households. Common industrial applications include:

  • Serving as fuel for industrial boilers, replacing coal, gas, and oil.
  • Acting as a heat source in power plants for electricity production.
  • Providing energy for saunas, spas, and heating systems in public pools during colder months.
  • Replacing electric and coal-based heating systems.
  • Supporting sterilization and pasteurization processes in food factories.
  • Heating swimming pools and hot water systems in hotels, schools, and recreational areas.
  • Powering industrial kitchens in large-scale restaurants.

Using wood pellets results in significant cost savings and environmental benefits. For example, one ton of wood pellet(s) generates energy equivalent to 120 gallons of oil but costs 42% less. Similarly, it replaces 170 gallons of propane while costing only 67%. Moreover, wood pellets produce less smoke, improving air quality and user health.

Experts predict that the wood pellet market will experience exponential growth. Global Market Insight forecasts the market to surpass $12 billion in 2023, with a CAGR exceeding 17.5% from 2024 to 2032. Rising demand for renewable energy in Europe and Asia-Pacific, combined with global economic and political factors, is driving this growth.

In Vietnam, the export value of wood pellet(s) reached nearly $800 million in 2022. During the first ten months of 2023, the revenue surpassed $250 million. South Korea and Japan remain the largest importers, accounting for over 90% of Vietnam’s annual exports.

South Korea, Vietnam’s leading export destination, categorizes industrial pellets into I1, I2, and I3 grades and residential pellets into A1, A2, or B grades. The minimum calorific value is 16.5 GJ/t, and ash content must be less than or equal to 5%.

Japan

Japan is a highly promising market but imposes stricter requirements. For instance, ash content must not exceed 2%, and lower levels are preferable. Japanese buyers often demand Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, which only larger facilities can provide.

Europe enforces the most stringent quality standards. Manufacturers must ensure that industrial wood pellet(s) have a maximum ash content of 1% and pack them in 15kg polypropylene bags. Residential pellets require an ash content of 0.5-0.7% and must include FSC and Enplus certifications to meet European Union regulations.
