ASEAN Secretary-General to Attend 2nd ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum
INTRODUCTION
From December 18 to 20, 2024, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, will attend the 2nd ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan. This event aims to enhance the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while focusing on digital transformation, sustainable growth, and economic resilience.

1- Key Activities and Objectives
Dr. Kao will meet Japanese government officials, business leaders, and academics during his visit. He will deliver a keynote speech at Kyoto University on ASEAN’s relevance today. Additionally, Dr. Kao will engage with Japan-based media and the ASEAN Committee in Tokyo to promote ASEAN’s visibility globally.
2- Foundation of ASEAN-Japan Cooperation
The forum follows the success of the 50th ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation Commemorative Summit in December 2023. This summit strengthened collaboration under three pillars: people-to-people connectivity, economic co-creation, and regional peace and stability.
Japan actively supports ASEAN through initiatives like the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the MIDORI Cooperation Plan, addressing issues like sustainability and digital innovation. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to tackling global challenges and fostering mutual growth【9】【10】.
3- Strategic Significance of the Forum
The forum reaffirms ASEAN’s central role in regional governance and highlights Japan’s importance as a strategic partner. Timor-Leste’s observer participation also signals ASEAN’s growing inclusivity and integration efforts.
Dr. Kao’s attendance will further strengthen ASEAN-Japan ties and advance cooperative efforts in key areas like supply chains, maritime security, and technology. This event is expected to yield actionable strategies for deeper regional integration and shared prosperity.
