Final Meeting
INTRODUCTION
The Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) convened its final meeting for the year at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia. The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Bovonethat Douangchak, Permanent Representative of Lao PDR to ASEAN, marking the conclusion of Lao PDR’s chairmanship of the CPR.
The meeting reviewed key initiatives and achievements under Lao PDR’s leadership in 2024. These efforts included strengthening regional collaboration, advancing ASEAN’s integration goals, and addressing critical regional challenges. Permanent Representatives from all ASEAN Member States actively engaged in discussions to reinforce the group’s unity and shared objectives for the coming year.

1- Achievements under the Lao PDR’s Leadership
Under the Lao PDR’s chairmanship, the CPR focused on several strategic priorities. These included:

Enhancing Regional Economic Integration: Significant progress was made in implementing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2025, with new measures introduced to facilitate trade and investment among Member States.

Strengthening Socio-Cultural Initiatives: The CPR supported programs that promoted ASEAN identity, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connectivity.

Addressing Emerging Challenges: Key discussions addressed climate change, public health emergencies, and regional security threats, with commitments to enhance ASEAN’s collective response mechanisms.
2- Handover to Malaysia’s Chairmanship
The 12/2024 CPR Meeting also set the stage for the CPR Chairmanship Handover Ceremony. During this event, Lao PDR officially transferred the leadership of the CPR to Malaysia. Ambassador Douangchak expressed gratitude for the support of all ASEAN Member States and highlighted the collective achievements made during the year. The incoming Chair, Malaysia, pledged to continue the momentum and focus on regional resilience and innovation.
3- Looking Ahead to 2025
The CPR’s discussions also outlined priorities for the upcoming year. These include deepening economic cooperation, advancing digital transformation, and addressing pressing environmental issues. Malaysia’s chairmanship aims to build on the foundation laid by Lao PDR, ensuring continuity and progress in ASEAN’s strategic initiatives.
The final CPR meeting demonstrated ASEAN’s commitment to collaboration and shared growth. As 2025 approaches, the group remains dedicated to achieving its vision of a cohesive, dynamic, and inclusive regional community.
