ASEAN INAUGURATES RCEP SUPPORT UNIT OFFICE TO BOOST REGIONAL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION
INTRODUCTION
On December 9, 2024, the ASEAN Secretariat officially launched the RCEP Support Unit (RSU) Office in Jakarta. This inauguration marks a significant step in advancing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The event featured prominent leaders, including Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Budi Santoso, Indonesia’s Minister of Trade, and Mr. Taufiq Arfi Wargadalam, Executive Director of the RSU.

The establishment of the RSU fulfills the mandate from the September 2022 RCEP Ministerial Meeting in Cambodia. Under Indonesia’s leadership, the RSU’s creation demonstrates the country’s commitment to enhancing regional economic integration. The RSU will provide vital institutional support to the RCEP Joint Committee and its subsidiary bodies, ensuring efficient implementation of the agreement and promoting regional cooperation.
The RSU’s role is crucial in optimizing trade and investment opportunities within RCEP, which now includes 15 member countries. These nations represent almost 30% of global GDP, making the partnership an economic powerhouse. The RSU’s operationalization is a major achievement for ASEAN’s drive toward economic growth and regional collaboration. It aims to support businesses, particularly SMEs, ensuring RCEP remains a modern and mutually beneficial agreement for all member nations.
