Cambodia’s Outstanding Achievements in 2024

Strong Economic Growth

INTRODUCTION

The year 2024 marks a significant milestone in Cambodia’s development. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, the government has implemented strategic policies, achieving impressive results in economic growth, social development, and international relations. These achievements not only improve citizens’ quality of life but also enhance Cambodia’s position on the global stage.

STRONG ECONOMIC GROWTH AND INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSION

In 2024, Cambodia’s economy continues to grow steadily. According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the country’s GDP is expected to increase by approximately 5.6%, driven by a strong recovery in industries, construction, and tourism. Notably, the government has introduced reforms to attract foreign investment and create a favorable environment for businesses.

Cambodia has also prioritized infrastructure development. One key achievement is the expansion of transportation and energy systems. By the end of 2024, the national electricity grid will cover 99.15% of villages, providing stable electricity to 95.25% of households. This not only enhances living conditions but also supports business and industrial growth.

Additionally, Cambodia has heavily invested in road infrastructure. Several highway projects have been completed, significantly reducing travel time between key economic regions. The Phnom Penh – Bavet Expressway, currently under construction with international support, is expected to boost trade with Vietnam and ASEAN countries.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN TRADE AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

In 2024, Cambodia’s trade relations have strengthened significantly. According to the Ministry of Commerce, trade volume between Cambodia and ASEAN reached $10.49 billion in the first eight months of the year, an 11.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This demonstrates Cambodia’s deepening economic integration within the region.

Beyond ASEAN, Cambodia has expanded its cooperation with China. A notable project resulting from this partnership is the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, inaugurated in October 2023. As the most modern airport in Cambodia, it plays a crucial role in boosting tourism and trade. Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted this project as a symbol of Cambodia-China cooperation.

Moreover, Cambodia has signed multiple trade agreements with major partners such as Japan, South Korea, and the European Union. These agreements not only expand export markets but also create job opportunities for millions of Cambodian workers.

IMPROVING CITIZENS’ LIVES AND SOCIAL WELFARE DEVELOPMENT

The Cambodian government has focused not only on economic growth but also on social welfare. A significant step forward is the expansion of the national healthcare system. In 2024, over 7 million people received social security cards, granting them free access to public healthcare services.

Additionally, Cambodia has implemented education support policies. The government launched free vocational training programs for over 50,000 young people, providing them with career opportunities. Thousands of new schools have also been built, particularly in rural areas, to enhance education quality nationwide.

The government has also introduced direct financial support programs for low-income families. In 2024, over 50,000 poor households and disabled individuals received government assistance. These initiatives not only improve citizens’ lives but also contribute to nationwide poverty reduction.

STRENGTHENING CAMBODIA-VIETNAM RELATIONS

Cambodia and Vietnam have continued to strengthen their bilateral ties in 2024. Both nations have maintained high-level meetings and signed multiple agreements in economic, defense, education, and healthcare cooperation.

Vietnam remains one of Cambodia’s largest trade partners. Bilateral trade is expected to exceed $10 billion in 2024, with key exports including agricultural products, textiles, and electronic components. Additionally, both countries are collaborating on infrastructure projects, particularly in border transportation networks.

Beyond trade, Cambodia and Vietnam have enhanced cooperation in education and training. Thousands of Cambodian students are currently studying at Vietnamese universities through government scholarship programs. This initiative not only improves Cambodia’s workforce but also strengthens bilateral relations.

CAMBODIA’S STRATEGIC VISION AND DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Looking ahead, Cambodia is implementing the Rectangular Strategy Phase IV, aiming to drive economic innovation, administrative reform, and global competitiveness. The government’s goal is to achieve upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050.

To achieve these targets, Cambodia is investing in technological advancements, promoting high-value industries, and developing renewable energy sources. Additionally, environmental protection remains a priority, with policies focused on reducing carbon emissions and preserving natural resources.

CONCLUSION

Cambodia’s outstanding achievements in 2024 result from continuous government efforts and reflect the country’s strong economic and social progress. With a clear strategic direction, Cambodia is solidifying its position in the region and globally. If the country maintains this growth trajectory, it will become one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies in the near future.
