Coal Mining Operations in Australia

Australia ranks among the world’s largest coal exporters. In 2017 – 2018, Australia produced about 510 million tons of coal, exporting 75% of this output. This makes Australia the third-largest fossil fuel exporter globally. According to the Australian Institute of Public Policy, Australia emits about 57 tons of CO2 annually, about ten times the global average.

Top 5 Largest Coal Mines in Australia

    1. Carmichael Coal Mine

Carmichael is located in the northern central Queensland basin. It ranks among Australia’s largest coal mines. Despite environmental concerns, the Australian government approved the project in 2020. Adani Enterprises owns this mine and aims to start production in 2021.
